Flam then Bergen

Flam is miniature Banff complete with the tourist trap furore. It is a place of striking beauty with a railway that takes load after load of cruise ship tourists up the spectacular mountain side to view the fjord below while they are eating their coffee and waffles. But there is only one alternative and a community of a few hundred deals with thousands everyday. A burger cost our waiter $29 US. The shops only carry trolls, sweaters and Norwegian souvenirs and they are swarming with tourists. Neat biking trail down the mountain but if I were a regular tourist I would skip this place just because of the crowding. Very few amenities to accommodate these hordes.

Last night on ship was lovely. Ate at upscale Blu Restaurant on board and then watched the fjord roll mistily by though both dinner and in the lounge listening to our favorite musician Will Foraker.

Docked in Bergen and now we are installed in our Hotel Clarion. We are both missing our butler. You can get used to that awfully quickly. I will talk about Bergen tomorrow. Anita and I are especially feeling a bit guilty here as we know how Judy would have loved it here! It is historically fascinating and our tour guide has emailed us that he has a surprise. We will keep you posted. Tomorrow we have a day to explore Bryggen before we go off on our family quest.
